Bitmap fonts are the right choice for every retro and pixel-art game. Making them shouldn't be a chore.

Every 2D game engine that cares about performance wants bitmap fonts, not raw TTF/OTF outlines. Vector fonts need to be rasterized at runtime, which burns CPU and creates inconsistent rendering across platforms. Bitmap fonts are fast, predictable, and pixel-perfect.

The problem is making them. Most engines accept BMFont's .fnt format, but getting from a TTF to a properly packed bitmap sheet with correct per-glyph metrics is surprisingly fiddly  and free tools often produce broken or incomplete output.

Bitmap Font Forge handles the whole pipeline.

Any font, any size Use any TTF or OTF from your system, pick any pixel size (8px for tiny UI, 48px for titles), and it renders every glyph to a transparent PNG sheet with correct spacing.

Full glyph control Full ASCII (95 printable characters) or a custom subset, pick exactly the characters you need and keep your atlas small.

Engine-ready exports

  • BMFont .fnt format, works with Godot, GameMaker, Phaser, Unity, and most 2D engines
  • JSON metrics, drop it into any custom engine with minimal parsing
  • Transparent PNG sheet, ready to use as a texture

Per-glyph precision Exports x, y, width, height, xoffset, yoffset, and xadvance for every glyph, the complete data your engine needs to render text correctly with no manual tweaking.
